Postdoctoral position in analysis of ice cores

Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, School of Earth Sciences, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, one year Postdoctoral Researcher in analysis of ice cores.

Description: Funding is available for a postdoctoral researcher with laboratory based expertise in chemistry and physics of the atmosphere/glaciers as part of the NSF-funded project entitled “Atmospheric Mineral Nanoparticles in Antarctic Ice during the last Climatic Cycle”, a program to identify and geochemically characterize atmospheric mineral nanoparticles in pre-industrial Antarctic ice during the last climatic cycle (PI Paolo Gabrielli, co-PI John Olesik).

Activities will include, but not be limited to, analysis of innovative proxies in ice cores samples and evaluation and interpretation of the data obtained. The techniques used include Transmission Electron Microscopy, Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (spICP-MS), spICP-Time of Flight MS, - ICP-Sector Field MS. Direct experience prior to the postdoc appointment with all of these techniques is not required. The researcher will be expected to present results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The initial appointment will be for one year, with possible continuation dependent on funding availability and performance. Necessary funds for conference travel will also be provided.

Requirements: PhD in relevant field (including environmental, physical, chemical or geological sciences) with research experience in one or more of the following: glaciology, paleoclimatology, aerosol studies, geochemistry. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with extensive laboratory experience in preparation of environmental samples in clean room conditions and/or in mass spectrometry.
