OCEAN:ICE (https://ocean-ice.eu/) is a Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Commission and UKRI aiming at understanding how the Antarctic ice sheet and surrounding Southern Ocean influences our global climate, as well as reduce the dangerous levels of uncertainty around how much it will melt in the coming centuries.
A leading objective of the project is to reduce the spatial and knowledge gaps in ocean observations around Antarctica, particularly relating to ice sheet-ocean interaction and deep water formation and export. We aim to assess the oceanic controls on heat and freshwater delivery to and from ‘cold’ (e.g. Weddell Sea) as well as ‘warm’ (Amundsen Sea) sites of ice sheet-ocean interaction around Antarctica, and the processes that control mixing, water mass formation and export over the continental shelves and subpolar basins.
We seek an enthusiastic, marine observation oriented scientist to complete our diverse, multidisciplinary and international team, and lead the deployment and analysis of various in situ marine observations in Antarctic shelf seas.
This post will deliver the BAS element of work package 1 of the EU/UKRI funded Horizon 2020 OCEAN:ICE, which will fund the entirety of the funding for the position.
The appointee will assemble circum-Antarctic in situ datasets from a series of EU and international partners, package them in a coherent format, and analyse/characterize/discern local and circum- Antarctic patterns of ocean variability, covering tidal to muldi-decadal time scales.
This work will have extensive collaborative components with a modelling component of the work package (led by AWI, Germany) and other work packages (led in France, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Norway and the UK) that focus on land ice and global ocean linkages.
