The University of Montreal is seeking for a Master’s student for a project titled Mapping and Characterization of Permafrost Conditions in the Polar Desert of Grise Fiord (Canadian Arctic Archipelago).
This project is part of the NRCan-funded research initiative NU-COAST (2024–2027), focused on coastal adaptation strategies in Nunavut. The selected student will document and map geothermal and geotechnical permafrost conditions in the coastal zone of Grise Fiord to support climate adaptation, infrastructure planning, and land-use decisions. Fieldwork will be conducted in collaboration with the Grise Fiord community, Geocryolab (Université de Montréal), and UQAR’s Laboratory for Northern and Arctic Coastal Studies.
Funding: $21,000 per year (2 years), with the possibility of additional employment as a teaching assistant in the Department of Geography at the University of Montreal. The selected candidate will be encouraged to apply for institutional, provincial, and national research scholarships.
Profile: Bachelor’s in physical geography, environmental sciences, or related field; bilingual (French/English); northern or Indigenous community experience considered an asset.
