PhD, Oceanography. Professor of Oceanography at Oregon State University until 1990. Director of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE) International Project Office— a large international project focused on the Western Pacific and global teleconnections, 1990 to 1994. Director of Atmospheric Technology Division for National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) until 2003. That group provided observing tools to weather, climate, and air quality research around the world. Director of the International Polar Year (IPY) International Programme Office from 2005 to 2010. IPY engaged thousands of geophysical, biological and social scientists in an intensive, internationally coordinated research campaign in the Arctic and the Antarctic. Education and Outreach Director for UNAVCO since October 2010.
