A compilation of E&O activities in Spain has been carried out to provide an overview of the IPY impact in communicating polar science to the public and to the educative system. The compilation includes activities in centers of all educative levels. Many Primary and Secondary schools, as well as universities have carried out activities related to IPY and polar science. In many cases universities have officially recognized credits to the participating students. Exhibitions, film sessions and general public open lectures have been organized by science museums, cultural centers and foundations. Several traveling exhibitions visited different Spanish cities. The most successful of them has received about 600,000 people. Several 'Fairs' and 'Weeks' annually dedicated to science in Spain paid special attention to IPY, having many thousands participants. Other initiatives orientated to the general public have been the issue of an official stamp and a coin about IPY or a square dedicated to Antarctica. Besides, a music concert to celebrate IPY and SCAR anniversary was performed at the National Auditorium in Madrid. It included, for the first time in Spain, the Antarctic Symphony from R. Vaughan Williams. A text about polar research and the IPY was distributed in the hand program to 1,400 spectators approximately. Journals, radio and TV have also given a special attention to polar information. Many Spanish researchers, educators, journalists and over one hundred invited foreign scientists, as well as students, have been involved organizing or conducting these activities. The data shows that an unprecedented number and variety of education and outreach activities and participants have occurred in Spain connected with IPY.
