Juneau Icefield Research Program
  • Students - in general
The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) field season is a two month field course that has been taking place annually since 1946. It attracts a range of groups from high schoolers to graduate students, although the emphasis is on undergraduate level research. Around 20 participants are selected based on their academic and physical abilities. The program begins in Juneau, Alaska, with a week of training, lectures and daytrips. The following six weeks are spent traversing the Juneau Icefield to Atlin, British Columbia, while incorporating learning and research. The students? experiences of the program and the effects of the program on their academic and personal development will be outlined. More importantly, subsequent outreach activities (that have reached in excess of 2000 people) and collaborations with both the IPY and national institutions such as the UK?s Royal Geographical Society have been formed.
