New Subject Earth Science in Norwegian Upper Secondary Schooling: Addressing Polar Themes
  • Educators, Teachers
In the latest reform, The Knowledge Promotion 2006, earth science was introduced as a science subject in Norwegian Upper Secondary School. The curriculum provides a unique chance to teach about earth as a system, how the sub systems interact and how human activity relates to the physical world. Competence aims allow the teacher to adjust the content to the local situation. Thus a polar perspective fits in many of the competence aims. Polar themes in particular are emphasized in the competence aim concerning causes and effects of climate change in polar areas. The importance of polar issues is reflected in the written exams given by the Directorate of Education. In order to meet the challenges following the implementation of a new subject, The Norwegian Centre for Science Education runs the five year project, ?Geoprogrammet?, sponsored by Statoil. The goal is to establish earth science as an attractive science subject, providing knowledge for future citizens and professionals.
