Polar Science in Edmonton classrooms
  • Educators, Teachers
Hands-On activities are essential for school age students to grasp concepts important to Polar Science. Students from the University of Alberta worked on specific experiments to engage the students in my class. The students worked in the classroom and outdoors on specific educational activities that highlight various Polar phenomena: Permafrost conditions, ice core observation, Grizzly Bear and Polar Bear tracking and dendochronology. This chance for students to and see firsthand the kinds of work a scientist does inspired them to further participate in IPY activities. These experiments are easy to construct and the concepts help students to make connections between laboratory experiments and experiments conducted in situ.
