Schools on Board - Circumpolar Inuit Field Program
  • Students - in general
During IPY, a Canadian program called Schools on Board, offered three International Field Programs in conjunction with the IPY - Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study. One of these was the Circumpolar Inuit Field program (CIFP), which took 8 Circumpolar Inuit youth from Alaska, Greenland, Russia, and Canada, and 2 program leaders onboard the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen where they became fully integrated in the life and research activities on the ship. This unique field program, planned in collaboration with the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), encompassed the IPY-CFL's "Two Ways of Knowing" philosophy, of integrating Western and Inuit knowledge into the research program and its outreach initiatives. This integration was accomplished by introducing the participants to both Western and Inuit knowledge related to Arctic climate change research in one field program. A traditional knowledge (TK) research project was developed as part of the program plan. This project introduced participants to oral tradition research techniques and guided them in carrying out interviews with Elders and knowledgeable community members in their home communities based around their perceptions and observations o climate change. This research was then shared through a series of knowledge exchange workshops with youth, Elders, northern community members, and IPY-CFL scientists. Introduction to scientific research was achieved during the days on board the CCGS Amundsen where participants joined the team of multidisciplinary scientists while they were actively engaged in conducting their research and fieldwork.
