Svartisen project
  • Educators, Teachers
At Mel?y vgs, programmes for general studies, the students visit glacier Svartisen in the beginning of their first year. Teachers and students in natural science and mathematics studies have contacts with scientists who are doing research on the glacier. The project has been going on for four years, and was further developed through IPY. The first visit is an intense, two days trip packed with outdoor adventures and learning opportunities. Before going, the students have been preparing the trip in the classroom for three weeks. Nearly all school subjects are included. Afterwards we continue taking advantage of the excursion in our classroom work, linking it to several subjects. The students write an assessment report about their learning and field work findings, and we are having a classroom debate about the future of the area. All learning tasks are consistent with the curriculum. They include field work on succession (ecology) using scientific methods, field studies of geology and the glacier, personal health task with energy measurements, and learning how to use maps and GPS. We compare glacier and succession from year to year, using it as a start point for studying climate issues. In physics, geosciences and chemistry we use Svartisen and glacier research as examples. Students and teachers have visited the IPY CLACIODYN research project at Engabreen, Svartisen, and we hope to be able to do more of this sort in the future.
