Communication through formal education and outreach activities helps bring exciting polar science to the general public through classrooms, museums, newspapers, and much more. Learning about the types of education and outreach activities, practicing simple communication skills, and having a bit of enthusiasm for presenting your research to a broader audience are the major requirements for successfully bringing scientific findings to a broader public audience.
Through communications workshops held at the IPY International Early Career Researcher Symposium and in conjunction with the ArcticNet Student Day in Victoria, Canada in December 2009, over 100 early career scientists learned some basics about education and outreach during interactive sessions. The workshops, hosted by the APECS, introduced participants to numerous types of outreach activities, followed by more intensive presentations ranging from public relations and social media opportunities, to outreach in classrooms and how to give a public lecture, in a meeting or from a remote field site.
