Art and science in an arctic landscape - Kunst en Wetenschap in een poollandschap
- Students - in general
In 2007, an expedition was organised to Daudmans-yra, West-Spitsbergen with 7 artists and 5 students. The goal was that each group would experience the landscape in its own way, reflect on it, and that both groups would come to a synergy. The students were recruited from different scientific disciplines (physics, biology, veterinary medicine, bio-engineering), and performed small didactic experiments in the field, ranging from nematods observations in the dung of reindeer, measurements on polygons, bird-plant-soil interactions, to earth magnetism. The artists could assist in these observations. The artist group comprised a painter, a ceramist, a video-artist, a singer-songwriter, a cineast, a poet, a photographer. All artists created some work reflecting their polar experience in the months after the expedition.
