Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

APECS is beginning an effort to help you figure out how to deal with all the data that you collect - and how to plan the management of this data before you actually collect it. We know there is a lot of things to know about data, and sometimes it can get a little overwhelming, with the help of the IPY Data Committee and others, we are hoping to design several training activities to help you learn about this important and critical part of research.

Why is Data Management important?

Want to know why archiving your data is important and why metadata is just as important (and what metadata is)... check out this funny video produced by Team Digital Preservation that is saving the world from nuclear disaster caused by the work of Team Chaos.

DigitalPreservationEurope(DPE), building on the earlier successful work of ERPANET, facilitates pooling of the complementary expertise that exists across the academic research, cultural, public administration and industry sectors in Europe. DPE fosters collaboration and synergies between many existing national and international initiatives across the European Research Area.

DPE addresses the need to improve coordination, cooperation and consistency in current activities to secure effective preservation of digital materials. DPE's success will help to secure a shared knowledge base of the processes, synergy of activity, systems and techniques needed for the long-term management of digital material.

Internet Data Resources

The web is a powerful tool for compiling resources from many sources in many disciplines around the world. There are many web databases of interest to Polar researchers, including those below. Please contact us if there are more you know of that we should add!

IPY Publications Database (IPYPD)
The IPYPDattempts to identify and describe all publications that result from, or that are about, the IPY 2007-2008 and the three previous IPYs.

The Cold Regions Bibliography Project
Maintained by the American Geological Institute (AGI), this resource contains both theAntarctic Bibliography and the Bibliography on Cold Regions Science and Technology, providingcoverage ofAntarctic research and exploration andCold Regions engineering and physical science information.

SPRILIB: A polar and glaciological bibliographic database
This database covers the literature of all subjects relating to the Arctic and Antarctic published in a wide range of languages. It also offers comprehensive coverage for all aspects of snow and ice throughout the world. In addition to records for books, chapters, conference proceedings and papers, government and other reports, SPRILIB includes records for articles identified through the regular scanning of over 1000 periodicals.

SPRI Picture Library Database
The Picture Library of the Scott Polar Research Institute holds an extensive collection of photographs, film and other illustrative material for Antarctica and all regions of the Arctic including northern Russia, readinly searchable on the Internet.

Arctic Science and Technology Information System (ASTIS)
Canada's northern database, ASTIS now describes 69,000 publications and research projects coveringthe Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, the northern parts of seven provinces, and Canada's arctic waters. The publications cited in the database include both peer-reviewed and grey literature.

Hydrocarbon Impacts (HI) Database
The HI database describes 6,900 publications and research projects about the environmental impacts, socio-economic effects, and regulation of hydrocarbon exploration, development, and transportation in northern Canada.

Polar Education Resource List
The Polar Education Resources webpage provides an annotated list of some of the best Internet resources for polar education; tagged by grade level, subject area, and resource type, educators can filter the list using any combination of tags. Available resources include lesson ideas, eBooks, photo galleries, and video and audio podcasts, as well as background content information for educators.

Polar Data Catalogue

The Polar Data Catalogue is a database of metadata and data that describes, indexes and provides access to diverse data sets generated by Arctic and Antarctic researchers. The records follow Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard format to provide metadata exchange with other data centres. The records cover a wide range of disciplines from natural sciences and policy, to health and social sciences. This geospatial search tool is available to the public and researchers alike and allows searching data using a mapping interface or other parameters. The Polar Data Catalogue was developed in Canada and is a collaborative project between the Canadian Cryospheric Information Network, ArcticNet and the International Polar Year.
