Dear APECS members, partners and friends

Thank you for your contributions and support in 2021!

It has been another exceptional year. Despite the pandemic, we again had many activities and initiatives of APECS’ Project Groups and National Committees. It makes us proud and happy that we are able to provide an increasingly important network for early career researchers. Connections within the polar and alpine cryosphere are not only drawn via various workshops, webinars, events (even some on-site!) and discussions but also via increasing interest of APECS member representation in many professional networks, committees and organizations.

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) are looking for two early career scientists to join the SOOS Southern Ocean Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiative.

The Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE) and Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) invite for a webinar on “Tracing Permafrost Carbon across the Beaufort Shelf - Satellites, water, microbes and mud” on 27 January 2022 from 15:00 – 16:00 pm GMT.

Interested in organising an APECS Workshop at the Arctic Science Summit Week 2022? The Organising Team of APECS is seeking members!

The XII Workshop APECS Portugal took place in Porto, the Invicta city, on November 30th, 2021. This was the return of presential events of APECS Portugal and this year we tried a new format, a hybrid model, at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research). The event received 30 participants presential and another 17 online, to celebrate the XII Workshop. For this edition, the theme chosen was “An Unexpected Journey - Polar Science in a Pandemic crisis” and the goal was to discuss the negative and positive effects of the pandemic on polar science expeditions, data collection, science outputs, networking and education; as well as lessons learnt.

The Antarctica Day Project Group decided to create a new tradition: A visual motto announced on each Antarctica Day which will be used as an Antarctic motto for the upcoming APECS year!

We define an Antarctic visual motto as an image that incorporates 2 elements - a short textual motto and a graphic depiction - to deliver a strong message about Antarctica. The idea is to include the general public by inviting everyone to submit their ideas for Antarctic mottos until the 10 December 2021.

The votes on our Antarctica Day 2021 Photo Contest are in. More than 130 people voted on the 14 amazing submissions under the overarching theme “My favourite thing about Antarctica”. A big thank you to all the people who submitted a picture and another thank you to everyone who voted and made this photo contest happen.
