Webinar title: Glaciers and mountain Permafrost in Argentina, more than just frozen water
By Dr. Lucas Ruiz, IANIGLA, CCT-Mendoza, CONICET
Summary: In 2010, after an intense debate, the first law to protect glaciers and periglacial landforms as water storage source was proclaimed in Argentina. The first step was to create a glacier and periglacial landform inventory. From 2012 to 2018 the IANIGLA has achievement the first glacier inventory of Argentina and build the first country-wide glacier monitoring network. This talk will broadly cover the National Glacier Inventory of Argentina research program, its main incomes, and withdrawals. The glacier law of Argentina, the development of the Glacier Inventory and its monitoring strategy is an excellent example to discuss the role of the scientists and the power of glaciers to generate concern among society.
