The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in cooperation with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is looking for an early career scientist to join the SCAR Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) Advisory Group.
Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) is an initiative of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) that aims to document research into climate change across the Antarctic continent and the Southern Ocean, and to assess its impact on the terrestrial and marine biota. It is concerned with how the climate of high southern latitudes has changed from Deep Time, through the Holocene and instrumental period, to how the climate might change in the future as a result of increases in greenhouse gases and recovery of the ozone hole. The group has been in existence for over a decade and as part of the 2007/8 International Polar Year, produced a 600 page volume entitled Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment. The book was well received and since that time the ACCE Advisory Group has produced a short update paper on the subject for the annual Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM) and several review papers on Antarctic climate change and its impacts. The original ACCE book has now been converted into a wiki that can be. A major update of the ACCE wiki will be undertaken over the next couple of years.
We are seeking an early career scientist to join the ACCE Advisory Group to work with the other members on providing advice to the ATCM and the broader Antarctic community on Antarctic climate change and its possible impact on the biota. They would also be involved in preparing review papers on Antarctic change. They should have a broad interest in Antarctic climate, which we take to cover the atmosphere, ocean and ice, and possible impact on the terrestrial and marine biota. The ACCE group works by email, as well as at the biennial SCAR Open Science Conferences if sufficient numbers of members are present.
Early career scientists will benefit from participation in the ACCE Advisory Group through contacts made with senior scientists, having the opportunity to influence ATCM decisions and the broader Antarctic community, and having authorship in future publications from the group. This is a voluntary position (no salary) and at this stage, no funding is available for the early career researcher. Meetings will be online.
