Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

USAPESC newUSAPECS is hosting a ‘Polar Science 101’ webinar series this summer! The goal of the series is to share polar science in an easily and accessible way, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration amongst APECS members.

This month’s Polar Science 101 webinar is titled Polar Science 101: International Teamwork by Pedro Marques Quinteiro on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 6 pm GMT. The 10-12 minute webinar will introduce Pedro and he will address the following:

Polar Science 101: International Teamwork

Teamwork in extreme work environments is a highly demanding activity that often requires the collaboration between multiple groups and individuals, coming from different nationalities and with different educational backgrounds. Such diversity challenges the human capacity to collaborate and perform along side international colleagues, especially in Antarctica. In this webinar I will share some of the findings and lessons learned from a two year research project about teamwork during Antarctica summer campaigns.

Pedro was born in Sesimbra, Portugal in 1986. He obtained his degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Lisbon and his PhD in Management from ISCTE- Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at William James Center for Research (ISPA- Instituto Universitário), where he conducts research regarding teamwork in isolated, confined and extreme work environments (i.e., Antarctica, Firefighters and Space). On this regard, he is currently involved in three research projects supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Ref. SFRH/BPD/114934/2016), the Portuguese Polar Program (Ref. PROPOLAR 2017-2018 - ETeA) and the European Space Agency (Ref. AO-2017-Concordia-014_Cantisani). In these projects he regards teams as complex adaptive systems and explores how emergent forms of leadership and team coordination dynamics drive team adaptation to unexpected events.

Please register for the webinar by 23 May, 2019 through https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_tmHxbcbMQlmvRwc9i9gRsA if you would like to attend.
