Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

 

apecs logo webAPECS participated in the ISAES 2019 symposium that took place in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from 22-26 July 2019. This year APECS contributed to the programme with a panel about Early carrer polar research and a poster about our association.

Panel

APECS organized a fascinating panel discussion on Monday 22 July as part of the ISAES 2019 side meetings. This panel was one of several side meetings during the symposium. The three hours event discussed the relevance of the early career researchers (ECR) in polar studies. We started with an introduction of the event by Lara Perez, and an APECS talk by Jhon Mojica, then we proceed with our four speakers, with many years of experience between them, shared many of their stories, anecdotes, and advice with an enthusiastic audience of over 20 people. The panel consisted of: Dr. Hongkum Lee (KOPRI) shared her life experience as woman working in polar areas, she give us a motivated talk antitle: Broader, higher, further for the dreams. Dr. Denise Kulhanek (IODP – T&M) also highlighted the important of perseverance in sciences. She pointed out how essential is to be flexible and able to move between diferent institutions (countries) to pursuid your aims. Dr. Alex Burnton-Johnson (BAS) shared a few stories about how get invlve in polar studies. Dr. Steph McLennan (Geocience Australia) gave an excellent overview of how fieldwork and colaborations with other scientist in different areas can change your life. At last Deniz Vural talked about National Commites and lead and excellent integration game to create bounds between the participants.

The panel was moderated by APECS council members Lara, Deniz and Jhon. A healthy discussion with the audience rounded off a well-appreciated and interesting hour talking about early carrer motivations. All this accompanied by a delicious Korean food.

On the side of the APECS event, we participate during the full week in the poster session, giving information about the association.
