From 20-21 April, this term’s Executive Committee (ExCom) and Executive Director gathered for a two-day meeting at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, one of the oldest universities in Europe.
The meeting was a great opportunity to discuss APECS matters in more detail than is possible during the online bi-weekly ExCom meetings and also provided the chance for ExCom members to get to know each other better and strengthen their team spirit. Topics discussed included past and future operations of the International Directorate, plans for a new APECS website and ExCom priorities for the remainder of the term, specifically: supporting Project Groups, organizing online get-togethers for APECS members and the term transition process with regards to transfer of leadership.
Prior to the meeting, APECS Portugal organized an ECR event with contributions about Portuguese polar science by experienced researchers and educators as well as ECRs – including an engaging presentation about the importance of APECS by one of the APECS founders José Xavier. The day finished with a career panel discussion with input from APECS Portugal and ExCom members as well as questions from the audience. Last but not least, a short tour through the University of Coimbra and excellent Portuguese food and pastries ensured that the APECS leadership visiting Coimbra had a memorable cultural experience.
