We are looking for three creative and motivated fellows, each of whom will receive a USD 750 stipend, to produce short, high-quality explainers suitable for Antarctic policy audiences.

Graphic announcement

Who should apply

This call is aimed at early career researchers (up to 5 years after their PhD)* working on Antarctic topics or Antarctic relevant science. We welcome applicants from all disciplines and regions. Priority will be given to ECRs from countries with developing economies or economies in transition, as defined by the United Nations. Individuals from underrepresented groups in the sciences are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants should have some prior experience in science communication and an interest in communicating with policy makers.* Early career researchers are defined as undergraduate students, postgraduate students, PhD students and those within 5 years of their PhD. In special cases (e.g. maternity/paternity leave), this five-year period may be extended.

What the fellows will do

Selected fellows will:

  • develop engaging explainer videos or other creative media product based on an Antarctic Environments Portal information summary or another Antarctic policy relevant document
  • take part in workshops and coaching in science to policy writing, storyboarding and media production
  • receive mentorship from the AEP management team, SCAR and communication experts at Imperial College London
  • learn transferable skills in policy messaging, multimedia storytelling and project leadership

Each fellow will receive USD 750 as a stipend to support their time and effort. The final outputs will be published on the Antarctic Environments Portal and shared via SCAR and partner networks for use in policy forums and meetings. These new products will provide new methods of communicating critical scientific information to a variety of policymakers involved in Antarctic governance.
