Crop Asia Early Career Polar Forum liangchen zhu

Dates: 25–26 June 2026

Venue: Zhuhai, China (hosted by Sun Yat-sen University)

We are pleased to announce the Asia Early Career Polar Forum, jointly initiated by APECS China and APECS Korea. This seminar is a collaborative activity voluntarily organized by our two national committees, under the theme "Youth Shaping Polar Science". The forum will explore how polar changes impact Asia and how young scientists can work together to address these challenges. Discussions will cover the cryosphere, ocean, and atmosphere interactions, observations and modeling, data sharing, polar expeditions, early career training, and science outreach.

Why Asia and polar science are deeply connected?

Asia is not a distant observer of the poles. When Arctic sea ice melts, it disrupts jet streams and brings bitter cold waves to winters across the continent. When polar ice sheets melt, sea levels rise and threaten the major coastal cities of Asia. Meanwhile, the melting Arctic is opening new shipping routes that could reshape global trade, with Asian economies standing to benefit directly. Asia has long been an active and valued partner in polar research, from Antarctic stations to Arctic expeditions. Scientists across the region share data and work together to address polar climate change, supporting one another in international polar bodies. Now is the time to bring early career scientists closer together.

Who can attend?

This forum is a friendly, open platform for young polar researchers across Asia to meet, share ideas, and build lasting collaborations. No matter where you are from, if you care about the poles and our continent's future, you are welcome. Early career researchers (students, postdocs, and early career faculty) with an interest in polar and cryosphere science are welcome to apply. Participants are expected to cover their own travel expenses. Local accommodation and meals will be provided by the host during the forum.

How to express interest?

Please contact us by 25 May 2026 (or as soon as possible) to confirm your interest or request further information.
