Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) invites applications to join our teaching and research faculty for the Summer 2022 field season.

JIRP is an interdisciplinary summer field school, aimed at undergraduate Earth science students interested in alpine and polar environments. JIRP is an immersive training experience for students in expeditionary research, glacier travel, field techniques, and fundamental science. JIRP maintains remote field stations across the Juneau Icefield in Southeast Alaska, and one of the world’s longest-running glacier monitoring programs.

We seek instructors who can contribute to our core curriculum of glaciology, glacial geology, and climate science, as well as in complementary areas of atmospheric science, alpine ecology, biogeochemistry, geomorphology, tectonics, polar engineering, or related fields. Our Teaching Faculty are volunteers eager to share their passion and knowledge with students in one of the most spectacular and engaging classrooms on Earth. Teaching faculty typically join the expedition for one~two week block during the summer. JIRP covers all costs of our teaching faculty once they arrive in Juneau, including food, lodging, and helicopter flights. Teaching faculty support our summer undergraduate education program by delivering lectures, leading workshops/exercises, and mentoring students on research projects. There is opportunity for faculty to conduct their own research, collaborate on existing projects, and to develop active learning pedagogy. JIRP is also an excellent opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to hone their teaching and mentoring techniques.

Additionally, JIRP supports a separate Research Faculty track for scientists looking to conduct externally-funded projects on the Juneau Icefield. JIRP can provide logistical support, opportunities to engage motivated students in your research, outreach possibilities, and connect you with other research for potential collaboration and cost sharing. On a case-by-case basis we can also explore possibilities to support research outside the normal time frame of the student summer program. In addition to recruiting Research faculty for the upcoming 2022 season, we are also seeking interest for future seasons, which you can express in the application forms linked below.
