New APECS publication on Job instability and international mobility

Postdoctoral researchers from APECS Spain and other APECS NCs, along with ECRs and senior researchers from different countries published a perspective article in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution on how it is to pursue a career in polar research these days

Job insecurity and instability are the main obstacles for polar early and mid-career researchers, while networking and international mobility increase their chances of success.

Call for APECS representation | Ice sheet ECS for ISMASS workshop organizing committee

An ISMASS workshop entitled “Ice Sheets: Weather versus Climate” (see description below) is planned for this summer (21 - 27 Aug 2022) in Reykjavik, Iceland. The workshop is organized by the Ice Sheet Mass Balance and Sea Level (ISMASS) group and supported by SCAR/IASC/CliC. The organizing committee (~5 people) is looking for one APECS Representative to join the ISMASS workshop organizing committee from now on until the end of August 2022.

Rainbow Over Polar Night

473 William Copeland Mike Van Den Berg Marie Hoff APECS Art Rainbow over polar nightThe goal of Arctic Pride was to organise an annual Pride festival in Tromsø, whose purpose is to create a safe and inclusive space for all people that deviate from social norms of gender and sexuality. Through the festival, the Municipality of Tromso also aims to establish dialogue, spread awareness and educate the public, in hope of promoting a society where everyone can freely express their gender identity, love and sexuality without fear of being discriminated, excluded or harassed. Arctic Pride works to promote diversity in an arctic context with focus on the challenges of both indigenous people and others living in the arctic region. Arctic Pride is held annually in November.

Greeting from the distant future of 2022! Wherever you are in the world, the APECS Science and Diplomacy Project Group hopes you had a wonderful new year’s celebration and are full of fresh inspiration and ideas for the future.

We are writing to inform you of an opportunity we are arranging for all APECS-affiliated ECR’s. Beginning this February, our PG will be hosting a bimonthly reading group to explore and discuss the possibilities and challenges of “Anthropocene” thinking. This group will facilitate dialogue and applied interdisciplinary theory in pursuit of solutions to the major challenges facing the fragile social-ecological systems of the Earth’s cryospheres.

APECS China co-organized the Glacier Memory Exhibition on Dec. 18th, 2021 in Beijing

APECS ChinaPartner shipping with China Association for Scientific Expedition and the China Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS China) and the Institute of International Rivers and Eco-Security, Yunnan University, Polar Hub launch its very first Glacier Memory Exhibition on Dec. 18th, 2021 at the Indigo shopping mall to celebrate the success of ice core drilling in November, 2021 in Tibet. From the perspectives of natural science and exploration, Glacier Memory showcases how the cryosphere interacts with the atmosphere, the ocean, and land as an indispensable unit of the climate system.
