Due to the increasing interest and awareness of the global significance of the Arctic, questions about stewardship and governance of the region are being asked more frequently. Governance structures suitable for effectively addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the circumpolar North are becoming more relevant than ever. This EU-PolarNet 2 and APECS webinar gives an overview of the legal regime of the Arctic and outlines the existing Arctic governance structures.

Following the shocking events of the spring and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, APECS thought it was important to issue a statement.  

The following events showed strong international support for Ukraine, and APECS is open to support these initiatives and will push for more help for Early Career Scientists in difficult situations, like those exiled from their homes.

We are looking for two people to replace two National Committee Coordinators (NCCs) until the end of the term (30 September 2022). Note that this position requires a high degree of commitment (around 1 hour/week), so before applying you should ensure that you will have the time to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.

The APECS Art webinar “Art in the time of conflict” addresses the importance of dialogue and collaboration during times of geopolitical crisis, exemplified by the current conflict in Ukraine.

The webinar will feature innovative artists and researchers from Russia and Norway, working across borders, to discuss the power of cultural collaboration and their own transdisciplinary and transnational work in our present moment.

*6 travel grants are available for early career researchers to participate in the 1.5-day ISMASS workshop entitled “Ice Sheets: Weather versus Climate” during the upcoming symposium “Cryosphere 2022”, an International Symposium on Ice, Snow and Water in A Warming World in Reykjavík, Iceland (August 2022)*

The 2022 edition of the Arctic Frontiers conference, "Pathways", will be held 8-11 May in Tromsø, Norway. The conference has a number of special programs and events for young students, researchers, and professionals.

APECS was well-represented at and heavily involved in the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2022, held 26 March to 1 April in Tromsø, Norway.

The elections for the 2022-2023 APECS Executive Committee will be held in May and June 2022 for the term from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023.

The APECS Art project group organised a “Science&Art” workshop led by Dr. Oliver Vanderpoorten. Oliver Vanderpoorten is a Postdoctoral fellow at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in the Nanoscopy group within the Physics department. His nanotechnology research often produces creative and aesthetic microscopy footage which he uses for exhibitions, outreach and science communication. Formerly, he was part of the Centre for Misfolding Disease at the University of Cambridge where he conducted research on nanolithography and nanoscopy methods. During his time at UiT he was mentor of the “Arctic OPTICA” chapter - a student organisation focused on optics. This gave him inspiration to form an outstanding, prize-winning collection of microscopic photography and supported him as a performing artist who uses light and optical phenomena as a media and art tool to communicate science to the general public at local events.

We have already arrived at the mid-term of our APECS year 2021-2022. We want to take this opportunity to provide a platform for our APECS members to get to know each other while enjoying our social gathering series.
