The Arctic Congress Bodø 2024 (May 29 - June 2, 2024) will be the combination of three events: the UArctic Congress, High North Dialogue and the 11th International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS XI). The Arctic Congress Bodø 2024 Programme Committee creates the session call and puts together the conference programme (e.g. the academic plenaries and parallel sessions). We are currently looking for one APECS representative to be actively involved in this committee alongside our Executive Director, Sarah Strand.

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS, http://www.soos.aq) are looking for an early career scientist to join the SOOS Southern Ocean Indian Sector Regional Working Group (SOIS RWG, http://www.soos.aq/activities/rwg/sois).

The APECS International Directorate has doubled in size this winter!

APECS is affiliated with the EU Project Arctic PASSION and is cooperatively calling for applicants for the Sharing Circle, announced above. The APECS International Directorate also organizes the application review process for the APECS & Arctic PASSION Sharing Circle for Early Career Professionals and Arctic Youth and invites anyone who did not or will not apply for the Sharing Circle to help as a reviewer. The APECS office will provide reviewers with instructions and score sheets, no previous experience in reviewing applications is required. You must be available in April/May to read through and score applications. The number of applications the reviewer will receive depends on the size of the reviewer pool.

APECS is working with the journal PLOS Climate to create a bespoke collection produced by APECS. We are looking for authors who would like to publish opinions and reviews that address a variety of thematic topics within the polar and alpine sphere that are connected with climate and that discuss experiences and the role of early career researchers (ECRs) in polar science. 

APECS Norway, in collaboration with the Arctic Marine Ecosystem Research Network (ARCTOS) and with support from the Challenger Society for Marine Science, hosted a 3-part workshop on science communication associated with the Arctic Frontiers 2023 conference in Tromsø, Norway.

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the EU Project Arctic PASSION are excited to announce the call for applications for the APECS & Arctic PASSION Sharing Circle for early career professionals and Arctic youth! The Sharing Circle will take place in Sevettijärvi and Inari, Northern Finland, from October 2-6, 2023. Applications must be submitted by 10 April 2023 23:59 GMT.

In coordination with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), Antarctic Science Ltd. is running a webinar to help potential applicants of 2023 Antarctic Science International Bursary. This bursary runs every year and is for up to £6000 to support PhD or early career researchers to extend the scope of an existing research project. Planning for the 5th International Polar Year (IPY) 2032-33

Joint statement from IASC and SCAR

Following their recently renewed partnership agreement, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) are pleased to confirm that preparatory work has started for a 5th International Polar Year (IPY) in 2032-33. Organizing the 5th IPY 25 years after the last IPY in 2007-08 reflects the urgent need for coordinated international research to tackle the biggest challenges of polar research, for both the Polar Regions themselves and for the world as a whole.
