The XII Workshop APECS Portugal took place in Porto, the Invicta city, on November 30th, 2021. This was the return of presential events of APECS Portugal and this year we tried a new format, a hybrid model, at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research). The event received 30 participants presential and another 17 online, to celebrate the XII Workshop. For this edition, the theme chosen was “An Unexpected Journey - Polar Science in a Pandemic crisis” and the goal was to discuss the negative and positive effects of the pandemic on polar science expeditions, data collection, science outputs, networking and education; as well as lessons learnt.

The Antarctica Day Project Group decided to create a new tradition: A visual motto announced on each Antarctica Day which will be used as an Antarctic motto for the upcoming APECS year!

We define an Antarctic visual motto as an image that incorporates 2 elements - a short textual motto and a graphic depiction - to deliver a strong message about Antarctica. The idea is to include the general public by inviting everyone to submit their ideas for Antarctic mottos until the 10 December 2021.

The votes on our Antarctica Day 2021 Photo Contest are in. More than 130 people voted on the 14 amazing submissions under the overarching theme “My favourite thing about Antarctica”. A big thank you to all the people who submitted a picture and another thank you to everyone who voted and made this photo contest happen.

The Arctic Observing Summit (AOS) 2022 is inviting Early Career Co-Chairs (ECC) for engaging in the upcoming hybrid AOS, convening 30 March - 1 April 2022, in Tromsø, Norway and online on the theme “Arctic observing at the intersection of health, understanding, and resilience”.

Due to the actual COVID-19 measures our symposium “For Sustainability in the Polar Regions“ will be postponed to 17 March 2022! See further information here.

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and APECS Germany are organising a webinar on the SCAR Fellowship Programme. The webinar will be held via Zoom on Antarctica Day, 1st December 2021 at 3pm UTC/4pm CET.

The Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE) and Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) invite for a webinar on How to measure water exchange in the Fram Strait using novel tracers? on 2 December 2021 from 13:00 – 14:00 pm GMT.

The international polar community celebrates Antarctica Day on the 1^st of December to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty. During this year, the APECS Antarctica Day Project Group (PG) has planned a series of activities for all our members and national committees to raise awareness of the importance of Antarctica in a fast changing world.
